About Us
Ian McVitie Weston started dealing in art in the 1970s, specialising in British 20th Century art. Over the last 40 years he forged a strong reputation for stocking striking works from a wide range of artists; some relatively unknown, to more established names.
The business has now been re-launched as a purely web-based concept – McVitie Weston. It is run by the second generation of the Weston family to enter the art world; brother and sister team Oliver J McVitie Weston and Naomi Courtenay-Luck. We aim to continue the ethos central to the success of Ian’s original gallery.
We specialise in Modern British paintings, drawings and prints from the 1930’s to the present day. Our collection includes works by such artists as George Hooper, Alan Davie, Giles Penny and Tessa Newcomb.
We have been surrounded by art all our lives. Our father, Ian McVitie Weston, is still an avid collector of objets d’art and our mother comes from a family of artists. You could say it was in our blood! Her Aunt was the painter and stained glass artist Rosemary Rutherford. Furthermore, our mother’s Great Aunt was Marguerite Milward, the anthropologist and artist who studied under Antoine Bourdelle in Paris. Rosemary studied at The Slade School of Art and during World War II she painted and drew whilst in the VAD. In recent years the importance of her war work has been recognised and examples appear in The Imperial War Museum and The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich as well as private collections around the world. Rosemary was a frequent visitor to Benton End in East Anglia and was friends with Cedric Morris and Lett Haines among others.
About Oliver: As a child I remember sitting in the garden at Benton End having afternoon tea with Cedric Morris. Rosemary had other artist friends including the renowned print maker Valerie Thornton. Valerie was my Godmother, and I have fond memories of her in her studio. My father built the foundations of what is our website today. We have continued to build on this and along with my sister we are reviving and updating the website to continue to offer a fascinating variety of modern British art.
About Naomi: I live in Hertfordshire with my young family and enjoy learning about the array of artists by father knew. I spend my time with my husband and children enjoying the great outdoors. I feel a strong connection with my Great Aunt, Rosemary Rutherford, whom I never met, and am surrounded by her flower paintings and haunting war drawings.
